An Adventure in Excess
This year the world has seen some of rock and roll’s most iconic artists leave us. Perhaps most notably, David Bowie who passed away in January of this year. He was an innovator, and creator of the highest caliber. A true original who was never afraid to push the envelope. As a result, he inspired the masses for decades and continues to do so posthumously. Myself included.
Back in May, I decided that it would be fun to do a photo shoot inspired by the rock and roll culture of decades past. I wanted to capture the bad-assery and excess of that time. A time that was less curated. A time when people did what they wanted because they wanted to. Not because they were trying to be anything other than their bold, beautiful selves.
So I set out to find a space to shoot. A studio wasn’t going to cut it. I needed it to be as unique and multi-dimensional as David Bowie himself. Eventually, I found what I was looking for. A Rock & Roll themed apartment complete with an entire room dedicated to the legend himself! It was wacky and over the top. The layers and textures of this space were the perfect backdrop for our photos.
We found all of the clothes we needed in Carolyn’s personal collection of vintage clothing. Let me tell you, that woman’s closet is vast! My personal favorite being that amazing canary yellow ball gown! We had so much fun doing whatever the *$%! we wanted that we actually felt like rock stars! The outcome: a tonne of really beautiful photos thanks to the tremendously talented Halima Jama. So many, that I actually considered splitting them up into two posts. In the end, I decided to give you all this goodness at once!
Special thanks to Jordan Virtue for modelling for us! This green-eyed beauty played the role so well! Also, flawless makeup by the sweetest Rebecca Pilozo. You are always such a pleasure to have on set!
I often times think that I must be the luckiest girl in the world because I have friends that help make all my dreams come true. I’m surrounded by creative people that inspire and support me on a regular basis. They are always down to join forces and create beautiful things with me. For that, I’m forever grateful. The words “Thank You,” simply aren’t enough….
“I’m just an individual who doesn’t feel that I need to have somebody qualify my work in any particular way. I’m working for me.” – David Bowie
“I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring.” – David Bowie
“The truth is of course is that there is no journey. We are arriving and departing all at the same time.” – David Bowie
“I’m an instant star. Just add water and stir.” -David Bowie
